‘Open In,’ ‘My Documents’ and ‘NY Times’ buttons…

Well if you haven’t yet seen or heard, you will soon. Some eagle-eyed freeze framers took a super close look at the iPad commercial that aired during the Oscars and found three new buttons for us to ponder and rejoice over:

-Open In: presumably this means you can choose the app within which to open a document. Huzzah!

-My Documents: presumably access to the file system, such as it is. Huzzah!

-NY Times: within the iBookstore app, presumably a link to NY Times Bestsellers. Again, Huzzah!

For the optimistic, none of this is surprising of course 🙂

Awesome find! – on my latest show of the iPad Possibilities Podcast – Episode 7 – The Padcaster – we actually discuss recording conversations over Skype on the iPad and with this shared file system and the ability to open files in whatever app you need to we will finally see great audio editor apps and other apps that need shared storage.

I’m getting really excited and I simply can’t wait until I get my hands on one! 🙂

Cool. I friend of mine is a fan of a Skype plug in (?) which is geared toward freelancers. Apparently it can help manage billable hours by timing calls, recording them, etc. It could dump into a spreadsheet for calculating fees, etc. Many possibilities!

Where is this? I don’t see it in the video.

Thanks for posting Bob. It's being covered pretty widely at the usual sites. Check engadget as they have all the screen captures and links to some others. Apparently one (I believe the Open In button) was actually spotted in a more careful/thorough look at the original keynote if you can believe it!

Wow interesting! Thanks for posting this. I’m looking closely at your website because I really wish to replace my hackintosh netbook with this to go along with my iMac at home. Just need things like “Open in” in iDisk or DropBox app so you can send documents to Pages or Numbers.

Thanks Rob. I’m definitely getting rid of my Dell Mini 9. It’s “neat” but more as a gadget experiment than as a truly useful tool. It’s feeling increasingly tough to hold out for the 3G iPad, but I must!

My concern is that the “My Documents” is simply a folder listing the docs within Pages and not the communal “My Documents” we are hoping for. Imagine if you docked your iPad and you could see the My Documents folder just like you see the camera folder with each app’s folder listed and their saved files within. That would be a dream.

    • yoyoyankees says:

Definitely a valid concern. The good news is that we’ll know soon enough. BTW hard to believe that Apple won’t spill all this info prior to shipping, no?

      • Bob says:

I’m thinking we’ll have more info tomorrow morning, but not too much info. Perhaps if pre-orders are not as much as they expect, they will release more information, but we all know that’s not going to happen.
